The Control of Asbestos at Work Regulations 2002, introduced in August 2002, require owners, registered users of a workplace building and landlords of rented domestic buildings to identify asbestos containing materials and 'manage' them in such a way as to present no risk to the occupants and visitors.

Asbestos related disease is the biggest occupational-health killer in
the UK. Many people are not aware that asbestos is present in their
buildings, however, it is estimated that asbestos materials are
present in over half of the United Kingdom's non-residential
buildings.
